The City of Las Vegas, in an effort to increase pedestrian and bicycle circulation and safety, has began upgrading several downtown streets.  The improvements include adding a four foot marked bicycle lane, new sidewalk paving, sidewalk widening, street trees and site furniture.  There are over three miles of streets being upgraded under this contract including First, Third, Bridger and Garces.  SLA also designed and the plans have been implemented for Hoover and Casino Center.  The designs follow the City’s Downtown Centennial Plan and the corresponding Overlay District.

The pedestrian sidewalks have been widened to accommodate better pedestrian circulation and to allow for space for benches, planters and street trees.  The paving patterns and materials help guide the pedestrians through the space.  Sidewalk paving at intersections is a red color brick pattern.  The street trees are in metal tree wells.  A special anchoring system was designed to secure the trees below grade until they root properly.  The style of the raised planters and benches varies depending on the street where they are located.

SLA has also designed similar streetscapes on Fourth and Lewis as part of adjacent building projects.  When complete the Downtown Las Vegas area will be a premier walking community.
